DRAGONS' LAIR

Dragon's Lair is an innovative program that combines the best of my coaching with the fun and supportive atmosphere of an online creative writing club where students help and learn from each other.

What to expect:

  • Story prompts - Don’t be worried if your inspiration well is dry, I have plenty of ideas to get you started! Writing prompts also make great challenges, to see what you could do starting from one little idea. I encourage students to invent prompts of their own, and challenge their fellow writers.

  • Send in scenes or stories bi-weekly - I’m not asking for full-blown books. These bi-weekly pieces are to help you put into practice what you’ve been learning, and to grow more comfortable in the craft.

  • Feedback on bi-weekly writing - Of course, growth needs feedback. You will receive your bi-weekly piece back with comments, noting where you still need work and pointing out where you shine.

  • Peer critique - A community critique group is designed not only for other writers to help you, but also so that you may help other writers. You will be learning creativity from a different angle, while strengthening each other.

Short story contests

  • Monthly Short Story Contests - will be held at the end of each month, giving you time to think, create, and refine. You may build your story from your bi-weekly submissions, or create your short story separately.

  • Story must be between 700-1000 words - A story with full introduction, conflict, and resolution is ideal, but cliff-hangers are permitted. What’s most important is being able to show off the creative skills you have learned and having some fun while you’re at it.

  • Publication Awards - If your story wins the contest, it will be illustrated and published along with other winning stories in an anthology at the end of the year.* You will be required to send in an author bio with your story.

*The annual short story collections must be pre-ordered before publishing.
